Abstract:Various alkali , alkaline earth and transition metal ions were separated by capillary electrophoresis and the effects of electrolyte composition such as complexing agent , pH and background electrolyte for indirect UV detection on the separation were studied. Imidazole and UV-Catl were chosen as background electrolytes for indirect UV detection to ensure symmetrical peak shape. The theoretical plates number reached 105 per meter. Under the given conditions, the relative standard deviation of migration times was less than 0. 5% and that of peak area was better than 4 %. The linear correlation coefficients of ion concentration with peak area were 0. 977 ~ 1. 000. The minimum detectabIe concentrations ranged from 0. 03 to 0. 5 mg/L.
