Electroviscous effect in an alternating electric field

Experimental dependence of the relative dynamic viscosities of liquid dielectrics on the applied alternating voltage amplitude and frequency is presented. The voltage frequency was varied from 20 Hz to 2 kHz. The variation of viscosity can be attributed to a change in the liquid structure, with ion-molecule complexes centered at the ions produced as a result of charge injection from an electrode. A change in the injection regime leads to a change in viscosity.
