Indole derivatives. 123. Effect of the substituent in the 2 position on the carbomethoxylation of 2-substituted 3-indolylacetonitriles

It is shown that the size rather than the electronegativity of the substituent in the 2 position of the indole ring has an effect on the Claisen condensation of 2-substituted 3-indolylacetonitriles with dimethyl carbonate.
