Abstract: | Whilst decarboxylation of dibasic acids and their derivatives under alkaline conditions and on heating at elevated temperatures is well established, the decarboxylation of the brucine salt of phenylmalonamic acid (brucine-2-carbamoyl-2-phenyl-ethanoate) unusually takes place rapidly in water at room temperature. The details of the kinetics are given.
