The r-centroid approximation and molecular transitions

The implications of the r-centroid approximation on vibrational transition integrals are explored with reference to simple harmonic oscillator wavefunctions. It is quantitatively established for molecular bands of low vibrational quantum number that the existence of a localised well-developed uncancelled peak in the wavefunction product is necessary for the approximation to hold well.
