Synthesis and absolute configuration of chiral 2, 3, 10, 11-tetrahydroxy-8-methylberbines 3] . The synthesis and absolute configuration of the four optically active berbines Xa, b and XIa, b are described. These compounds consitute potential ‘alkaloids’ obtained by condensation of either R-(+) or S-(?)-norlaudanosoline (THP, III) with acetaldehyde, a major metabolite of ethanol.
