The researches of anthropologists and hnguists show that cognitive development goes hand in hand with cultural and linguistic development, and the three are closely related. The understanding of a language depends to a large extent on its cultural context. Proficiency in a language is not enough to understand the theme of an article; knowledge of the specific cultural thinking patterns of the language is quite necessary. The present article begins with the main differences of syntax and discourse structures in English and Chinese, reveals the prominent disparity of cultural thinking patterns in the two cultures and emphasizes the importance of understanding this difference for intercultural communications.
