Nuclear excitation via free-bound muon atomic transitions

We have examined the probability of the excitation of the giant nuclear dipole resonance through the radiationless capture of a free muon into a bound orbit. Our calculation predicts that the probability is extremely small, about 4 × 10^?5 per stopping muon in lead in the surface transition model.
