Link invariants fromN-state vertex models: A note on an alternative construction

We prove that the hierarchy of polynomial link invariants that Akutsu, Deguchi and Wadati constructed fromN-state vertex models is obtainable without vertex models as well. The proof is done by constructing a certain type of link invariant, what we do here in detail for theN=2 andN=3 cases.Presented at the 4th International Colloquium Quantum Groups and Integrable Systems, Prague, 22–24 June 1995.
