Abstract:Based on the author's recent work, a detailed discussion has been given in this paper on the static responses of multilayered elastic foundations to general surface loading and body force. The formulae for calculating the displacement and stress components in this general case are deduced by the combined use of a system of special vector functions and the propagator matrix method. Numerical calculations for three examples with different number of layers and different distributions of surface loading are given. A procrustean technique is introduced to speed the convergence of the slowly convergent sequence obtained from numerical quadrature.From the formulae given or their programmed counterparts and numerical calculation, it is apparent that the combined use of the system of special vector functions, the propagator matrix method and the procrustean technique is not only general, but also simple and easy to apply in practice. Thus, it is convenient and efficient to use this combined method to analyze this type of engineering problems, it is especially, applicable to the case of viscoelastic responses of multilayered foundations.
