Model of instabilities in PdHx and PdDx

The instability and inhomogeneity of the PdH_x and PdD_x systems is discussed. A simple model based on the existence of more than one local electronic and or ionic configuration is proposed, and the results of this model are shown to be consistent with several important lattice properties of these systems including a difference between the Pd-H and Pd-D force constants.
