Abstract:It is proved that the cone length or strong category of a productof two co-H-spaces is less than or equal to two. This yieldsthe following positive solution to a problem of Ganea. Let {alpha}{varepsilon} {pi}2p(S3) be an element of order p, p a prime ≥ 3, and let X(p)= S3{cup}{alpha}e2p+1. Then X(p) x X(p) is the mapping cone of some map{phi} : Y -> Z where Z is a suspension. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification55M30, 55P50 (primary); 55P45 (secondary).
