Abstract:The pollen morphology of 16 population including 3 genera, 12 speciesand 2 varieties of the tribe Thermopsideae (Leguminosae)from China wasexamined under optical microsope and scanning electron microscope. Thepollen morphology was divided into 3 different types based on pollenshape and aperture characters, i.e., Ammopiptanthus type, Piptanthustype, and Thermopsis chinensis type. Pollen morphology indicated thatAmmopiptanthus was the most primitive and isolated genus in the tribe;Piptanthus was the most advanced genus and had a close relationshipwith the advanced species of the genus Thermopsis. In the genus Thermopsis,those species with alternata flowers were primitive ones, e. g. T. chinensisand those with whorled flowers were advanced, e. g .T. barbata; T .turkestanicawith specific pollen morphology was a definite species and could not betreated as infraspecific taxon of T.lanceolata.
