| Abstract: | A characteristic equation is derived for an isotropic spherically layered ionosphere with allowance for ground reflections. An analytic model of ionospheric reflection is presented. Simple formulas are provided that relate various characteristic ionosphere heights. It is shown that the electromagnetic field calculated as a mode sum matches the Sommerfeld plane-case field in the near zone and that for ranges greater than 1 mm the incoherent field describes the average field well.St. Petersburg State University.
