Abstract:Summary The SFC retention behaviour of alkanes, alkylbenzenes and chloroalkane was investigated by studying solute/mobile phase/stationary phase interaction enthalpies. The methylene group and functional group contributions to solute retention were calculated in pure CO2. It was shown that hydrophobic interactions mainly control retention in pure CO2. Interaction between the polar extremity of C10CN ligands and residual OH groups on the silica surface was suggested as an explanation of the retention obtained on such ligands. This was confirmed by experiments carried out with modified CO2.
