Abstract:The effects of various chloride salts on the graphite-furnace atomic absorption signal of bismuth are described. The chloride interference arises from coordination of chloride ions to bismuth(III) in solution, as confirmed by u.v. spectrophotometric and polarographic studies on the interaction of hydrochloric acid and bismuth(III) in solution. The interference can be removed by addition of diammonium-EDTA.
