Synthesis of some novel polyoxygenated quinolines

Polyfunctional quinolines were obtained via thermal cyclization of phenylaminocrotonates and malonanilides and characterized by uv, ir, and ¹H and ¹³C nmr spectra. Dehydration of a derivative of 5-hydroxymethyl-4(1H)-quinolone yielded a derivative of 5H-furo2,3,4-de]quinoline, representing a novel tricyclic system.
