The classical Yang-Mills field of a quark source

The Coulomb solution of the classical Yang-Mills equations with external source is unstable for sufficiently strong coupling constant. We show that the Yang-Mills system has no other physically static, spherically symmetric solution. Some consequences for the quark confinement problem in non-abelian gauge theories are pointed out.
