Stöße zwischen orientierten Thalliumatomen im 62 D 3/2-Zustand und Edelgasatomen

By exciting thallium atoms with circular polarized light of the thallium resonance line 2768 Å an orientation of thallium atoms in the 6² D _3/2 level can be generated. Our experimental results show that part of this orientation has been transferred to the 6² D _5/2 thallium level by collisions with inert gas atoms. A series of experiments was carried out using He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe as buffer gases. In all cases the direction of the transferred orientation was found to be inverted.
