Nonequilibrium hypersonic flow of carbon dioxide gas over blunt bodies

Abstract:The Navier-Stokes equations are used to investigate hypersonic flow of carbon dioxide gas over blunt bodies with allowance for nonequilibrium development of chemical reactions and vibrational relaxation of the CO2 molecules. The problem is solved by the method of stabilization by means of an implicit difference scheme that includes the use of Newton's iterative process. The results are given of calculations of the flow field, the convective heat flux, and the frictional stresses on the surface of blunt cones with spherical noses. The influence of admixtures on the flow field and the heat fluxes is investigated. The results of the calculations are compared with the locally self-similar solution for the neighborhood of the front stagnation point.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 199–202, September–October, 1979.
