| Abstract: | Crystallization of phospholipids was studied and single crystals grown which diffracted X rays to a resolution of 0.7 Å. The preparation of single crystals required purified samples and was strongly influenced by solvent/crystal interactions. The growth conditions and properties of these phospholid single crystals are related to the formation and properties of bilayers as in biological membranes. A structure for the polar surface layer of bilayers is proposed. |
