Penalty methods for minimal surfaces with obstacles

Summary In this paper, we discuss an approach to the obstacle problem for minimal boundaries via penalty techniques. After investigating some classes of penalized problems, a general method is introduced, based on the minimization of a suitable functional containing an extra term related to the mean curvature of the given obstacle.
