Charge-Transfer Complexes between Substituted Pyridine N-Oxides and 2,3-Dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone

Spectrophotometry was used to study charge-transfer complexes between substituted pyridine N-oxides and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone. Vertical ionization potentials of pyridine N-oxides in the gas phase and in solution were calculated by the CNDO/S3' method. The calculated ionization potentials in chloroform nicely correlate with the experimental charge-transfer wavelengths of the complexes.
