Abstract: | Isotropic Raman linewidths of the CH and CD symmetric stretching modes of methanol and methanol-d4 have been measured as a function of concentration in normal water, in heavy water and in carbon tetrachloride. On the basis of the concentration dependence of observed linewidths, intermolecular interactions and liquid structures in the methanol—water system are discussed. It is suggested that there may be some difference in mutual affinities or abilities of hydrogen bonding in the order D2O > H2O > CD3OD > CH3OH. |
