Abstract: | This article describes the simulation and subsequent optimization of a cell recycle fermentar and membrane filter in a wheat-to-ethanol process. The optimum conditions with respect to economic operating performance were found using a search method similar to steepest gradients. Optimum fermentor cell and inlet substrate concentrations were 54 and 127 g/L, respectively. The study also involved the effects of parameter variations on net cost, and the effects of raw material and product prices on profitability. The net cost was found to be most sensitive to the product yield and wheat costs. |
