| Abstract: | reaction: see text] A new method for the synthesis of substituted pyranone hemiketals from dioxanorbornanes via SmI(2) is described. Also reported is a synthesis of spiro4.5]ketals from analogous intermediates via acid-promoted deprotection/ketalization. |
