Abstract:
Inexpensive micromachined varifocal mirrors, providing a very wide range of focal distance control are described. The focal distance of a mirror with a clear aperture of 1 cm can be controlled in the range ∞ to +0.25 m (four diopters) in a frequency band up to 75 Hz by applying control voltages in the range of 0 to 200 V. Applications for quick focus control in a CCD camera and for direct correction of the accommodation depth of a human eye are reported.
