Abstract:A study was performed to explore the feasibility of processing a polyethylene by selective laser sintering. The polyethylene powder was characterised by scanning electron microscopy, particle size analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The laser sintering processing conditions, especially powder bed temperature, laser power and laser scan counts, were studied. Well defined tensile testing specimens of the polyethylene were produced successfully by double laser scanning. The effect of the thermal history during the laser sintering process on the mechanical properties of the laser sintered parts is discussed for the first time.
