von Neumann stability conditions for the convection-diffusion eqation

Abstract:A method is presented to easily derive von Neumann stabilityconditions for a wide variety of time discretization schemesfor the convection-diffusion equation. Spatial discretizationis by the K-scheme or the fourth-order central scheme. The useof the method is illustrated by application to multistep, Runge-Kuttaand implicit-explicit methods, such as are in current use forflow computations, and for which, with few exceptions, no sufficientvon Neumann stability results are available.
