| Abstract: | A self-similar solution is obtained for the self-consistent hydrodynamic equations describing the motion of an ellipsoid of
charged particles in a Penning trap and in an rf trap. The conditions are determined for which a small periodic variation
of the confining magnetic field in the Penning trap drives oscillations of the bunch.
