Abstract: | Scientific ideas and techniques grow and develop with time, and it is usually unrealistic to label a ”first“ experiment of any kind. Nevertheless, there are reasons to suggest that an experiment done by a famous physicist in Adelaide (South Australia) in 1908 provided the initial impetus for 30 years of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy research during the years 1908–1938. The present paper focusses on the years before World War I (1904–1914), and highlights a piece of work previously remembered for different reasons. |
