Abstract:Some of the theories which have been proposed to explain the thermal and photo-instability of poly(vinyl chloride) are reviewed. It is concluded that the defects introduced into PVC during manufacture cannot explain the very rapid HCl loss that occurs during processing. Hydrogen chloride and hydroperoxides are formed very rapidly during processing due to mechano-oxidation and it is concluded that a rapid redox reaction between these species produces radicals which lead to the HCl unzipping reaction. Photo-oxidation is initiated primarily by hydroperoxides produced during processing. The role of PVC stabilisers is reviewed in the light of these mechanisms.
