Karpoxanthin and 6-Epikarpoxanthin A tetrahydroxy-β,β-carotene previously isolated in minute amounts from ripe hips of Rosa pomifera was now identified as (3S,5R,6R,3′R)-5,6-dihydro-β,β-carotene-3,5,6,3′-tetrol ( 2 ). Acid hydrolysis of (9Z)-antheraxanthin ( 3 ) gave 2 and its C(6)-epimer 4 . Tetrol 2 is named karpoxanthin.
