Abstract: | It is shown that optical second harmonic generation can be used to probe a number of important properties of liquid crystals: second order non-linearity of liquid crystal molecules, polar ordering and orientation of liquid crystal monolayers at various interfaces, and bulk alignment of molecules in supported and freely suspended films. Surface effects on bulk alignment can also be investigated. |
