Abstract:Correlation studies (calculation of the cross-correlation function and correlation coefficients) were carried out between fluctuations in the emission signals from various analyte and internal standard elements. Some statistics are presented which may help give a clearer picture of the utility of the internal standard principle. Improvements in precision brought about by the use of suitable standards are in the region of a factor of two. The use of argon emission lines as internal standards does not prove effective as an inverse correlation is observed between the emission of these lines and analyte lines.
