Abstract:119Sn NMR studies have revealed that tin layers formed upon crystallization of a melt on the surface of bulk polycrystalline β-Sn samples in a dc magnetic field of 9.4 T are oriented with respect to the direction of the magnetic field. A comparison of the intensities of the signals obtained from melted and crystallized layers has shown that the volume of the oriented regions can approach that of the entire melted surface layer.
