Abstract:A series of 2-hydroxy-4-(1'-methylheptyoxyl) benzalkanone oxime (2) was syn-thesized for structure-reactivity studies as ligands in metal extraction. Reaction of resorcinoland fatty acid in the presence of zinc chloride leads to 2,4-dihydroxybenzalkanones (3).This is converted to 2-hydroxy-4-(1'-methylheptyoxyl)benzalkanones (4) by selective O-alk-ylation with sec-octylbromide. The chemoselectivity of this reaction may be rationalized bythe formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonding of the substrate. Upon treatment withhydroxylamine in the usual manner,4 is converted smoothly to 2. Both 2 and 4 are hither-to unknown compounds which are characterized by IR, ~1H NMR and MS in addition toelemental analyses.
