Abstract:A dc-potential of 1.5 V between a platinum wire and a platinum crucible containing a magnesia–titania alumosilicate melt is sufficient to cause nucleation and subsequent crystal growth of mullite at the cathode at a temperature high enough to prevent nucleation under normal conditions. This crystal growth is fast in the crystallographic (0 0 1)-direction and leads to a glass–ceramic with a highly oriented microstructure. The mechanism of this process is discussed as well as the crystallization behavior under normal conditions.
