Interactions of Cr2S3 with GeS2 and Cu2GeS3

The interactions in the GeS₂-Cr₂S₃ and Cu₂GeS₃-Cr₂S₃ sections were studied by differential thermal analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. The GeS₂-Cr₂S₃ section was shown to be quasi-binary, with a degenerate eutectic; no ternary compound was formed. In the Cu₂GeS₃-Cr₂S₃ section, a quaternary phase of variable composition having a homogeneity range of 69–75 mol % Cr₂S₃ crystallized in the cubic system. The samples of this composition are spin glasses with freezing temperatures of 20–25 K.
