| Abstract: | The reaction of phenylhydrazones of phenyl- and benzylketones2 with I2 in pyridine followed by alkali treatment yields  - and  -phenylazo-styrene derivatives4 and5 respectively. The increasing bulkiness of an additional hydrocarbon substituent attached to the olefinic moiety affects the stereochemistry of the heterodiene system of these compounds as evidenced by their spectra.
