| Abstract: | Salicylamide condenses with γ,δ- or δ, -unsaturated aldehydes to give cyclic amidals which readily undergo diastereoselective mercury(II)-mediated amidocyclization. The resulting products serve as versatile intermediates for further elaboration as nitrogen heterocycles. |
