Abstract:Growth of Cusingle bondO chains and their ordering on Ag(110) surface were monitored by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). When Cu atoms were deposited on a (2 × 1)Agsingle bondO/Ag(110) surface at room temperature, the Agsingle bondO chains in the [001] direction diminished and new strings of Cusingle bondO grew along the [110] direction and yield a (2 × 2) p2mg ordering. When a Ag(110) surface with coexisting Agsingle bondO and Cusingle bondO chains was exposed to CO at room temperature, the Agsingle bondO chains were selectively reduced.
