At the present more than 80% of the total amount of purchased radioactive compounds are used in clinical practice. The field is dominated by technetium coordination compounds. Increasing knowledge on the coordination, redox-reactions, and radiochemistry of this element was the basis for elaborating first rationales on the chemical reasons for the biolocalization of those compounds.

This has stimulated the exploration of new ^99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals. A further acceleration of this fast growing field is expected.
