Abstract: | The crystallization of amorphous Cu60Zr40 prepared by magnetron sputter deposition was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Calorimetric results were similar to those reported in the literature for liquid-quenched Cu60Zr40, including the manifestation of a glass transition. Crystallization above and below the glass transition temperature, Tg, occurred by nucleation and growth of the equilibrium phase, Cu10Zr7. This phase was characterized by convergent beam electron diffraction. With isothermal annealing below Tg, the time scale for crystallization indicated that the vapor-quenched alloy was kinetically more stable than the liquid-quenched alloy. This was interpreted as a difference in the quenched-in structures, produced by the different synthesis methods. During longer anneals, TEM analysis indicated that the structure was being contaminated by oxygen. |
