Abstract:The adsorption of oxygen on the W(110) plane was carried out at 26 K and investigated by means of ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that atomic oxygen is adsorbed first to essentially saturation coverage (O/W = 0.6) before adsorption of molecular oxygen occurs. The spectrum of the latter is very similar to that of gas phase O2 but the shift to weaker binding energies is greater for the 1 s level than for the valence orbitals.
