| Abstract: | The elastic distortion of a conducting surface when a point charge is brought near the suface is investigated theoretically. The displacement field is calculated with the aid of a Green's function in terms of known functions. General results for surface and bulk displacements are displayed graphically. Numerical results for tungsten and aluminum are presented. Modifications of the image potential due to the distortion are discussed. |
