Abstract:A proper evolutionary definition of material symmetry is presented. The evolution of a material's symmetries as the material undergoes a deformation history is followed, and a procedure for the identification of those changes which are common to all simple materials is provided. Explicit results are presented for initially isotropic, transversely isotropic, and orthotropic materials undergoing simple deformation histories.
