The circular dichroism spectra of the cyclodextrin complex with 1,4-benzocyclooctenedione

Abstract:The assignment of the absorption spectra of 1,4-benzocyclooctenedione (1) is reported by measuring the circular dichroism spectra of the β-cyclodextrin complex with 1. It is concluded from the signs of the circular dichroism bands that the first (16.6 × 103−27.4 × 103 cm−1) absorption band is composed of two electronic transitions having perpendicular polarizations with respect to the long axis of 1, the second (27.4 × 103−35.8 × 103 cm−1) absorption band has the transition dipole moment parallel to the long axis of 1 and the third (35.8 × 103−44.3 × 103 cm−1) absorption band is composed of two electronic transitions having perpendicular and parallel polarizations with respect to the long axis of 1.
