Abstract: | This brief note describes the thermal design of a highpressure compressor rotor of an aero-engine. First the computational methods and heat transfer models used are outlined. Then some results of detailed transient temperature calculations are presented which serve as a basis for stress and life predictions. It is shown that by venting the rotor cavities by careful routing of small amounts of air taken from the secondary air system, a considerable improvement of life may be achieved. Another welcome effect of the more rapid thermal response of the rotor is that the thermal growth behaviour is more closely matched to that of the casing, resulting in reduced clearances between casing and rotor, thus higher compressor efficiencies and larger surge margins.
