Size and surface effects on phase transitions

Abstract:Size effects on liquid crystal phase transitions are investigated by scanning calorimetry of samples absorbed in porous silica. For pore diameter of order 100 Å, the liquid crystal transition depressions are of order 0.1°C and the solid melting points of order 10°C.
